Where to Find Replacement Hardware for Antique Furniture
If you enjoy collecting antique and vintage furniture, you're not alone. Many people love collecting antique pieces of furniture from many different time periods. Examples of popular types of furniture to collect include old brick furniture, Victorian antique furniture, English antique furniture, Legacy classic furniture, Asian antique furniture and many more. One issue you may need to confront at some point is that of replacement hardware for antique furniture. Whether or not you should replace the hardware will depend on the furniture and why you bought it.
For example, if you purchased the furniture as an investment, replacing the original hardware will probably detract from the value of the piece. However if you purchased the furniture to use in your home then replacing the hardware might be a good idea, especially if it is broken or does not function properly. It might also be rusted or unsightly, in which case you may want to replace it. Although you probably don't want to buy a replacement part from your local hardware store, the good news is that there are plenty of companies and antique furniture centers that sell replacement hardware.
Your goal when replacing antique hardware is to replace it with another piece of antique hardware that is identical yet in better condition. Now, this may not be possible in all cases. If you are unable to locate real antique hardware, antique furniture reproduction hardware is often just as good. This is especially the case if the furniture is being used in a practical manner and will not be resold in the future. Reproductions these days are just as beautiful as the real thing -- and many people won't even know the difference.
If you have a local antique furniture dealer in your area, ask them about replacement hardware for antique furniture. If they cannot help you or you do not have a decent shop near you, the Internet is your second best bet. There are lots of online antique dealers who offer not only furniture but hardware as well. The great thing about the Internet is the selection -- you can find items from collectors and dealers all over the world. Hard to find items are no longer so hard to find, thanks to the World Wide Web!
