German Antique Furniture: Charm and Craftsmanship in One
When many people think of German antique furniture, the first thing that comes to mind are antique clocks. This is a fairly accurate assumption, as Germany is famous for their various timepieces. For example, Black Forest cuckoo clocks are some of the most beloved and sought after clocks in all the world. Cuckoo clocks were actually invented in the Black Forest region of Germany in 1737 and are still made there to this day. There are also other varieties of German antique clocks that are prized by collectors, including grandfather clocks, wall clocks and table top clocks.
Timepieces aren't all there is to the world of antique furniture from Germany. There are plenty of incredible pieces that are prized by collectors for every room of the home. First, let's talk about the time period known as Biedermeier. The Biedermeier era of furniture design spanned from 1815-1848 and was in direct contrast to the dominant rococo style of France and England. During this time, furniture was rectilinear with very few curves or ornamentation. Woods used were of the highest quality and function was held over form. This movement eventually expanded from Germany into Scandinavia and still influences many of today's furniture designers.
Another notable period was the Jugendstil period of furniture design. This era was prominent in the 19th and 20th centuries and was quite similar to the Art Nouveau movement in other countries. The Jugendstil movement quickly spread from Germany to other areas of Europe such as Belgium, France and Austria. The furniture made during this time featured prominent curves and lines, and was often inspired by Japanese artwork. The look was sparse yet compelling and definitely like nothing seen before.
If you're a collector of German antique furniture, then you will certainly find plenty of gorgeous pieces to choose from. And if you can't, antique furniture reproductions are a great idea, especially if you'll be using them as functional pieces for your home. To learn more about German antiques, inquire with an antique furniture dealer or antique furniture centers in your area. If they can't provide you with what you want, they might be able to refer you to who can. One way to start a collection of German antiques is to begin with the legendary timepieces and work your way up to larger furniture items.
